Research Assistant Zeynep Akkuş has her Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Engineering Department from Bilkent University in 2018 and Master's Degree in Industrial Engineering Department from Middle East Technical University in 2022. We are happy to announce that Associate Professor Ertan Yakıcı and Research Assistant Elif Ecem Çeltek have joined our department. Dr. Yakıcı received his doctorate from METU Industrial Engineering Department in 2013. Before his doctorate, he received his bachelor's and master's degrees in Industrial Engineering from the Naval Academy and Georgia Institute of Technology, respectively, and his master's degree in Business Management from Çankaya University. Dr. Yakıcı served in different units within the Turkish Armed Forces between 1999 and 2014 and worked as a faculty member at the National Defense University Naval Academy between 2014 and 2023. Dr. Yakıcı, who conducted post-doctoral research at the Naval Postgraduate School in 2015 and 2016, focused his research on the application of operational research and metaheuristic methods in addressing location and routing problems and solving multi-criteria location problems. Research Assistant Çeltek graduated from Gazi University Industrial Engineering Department in 2015 and from Gazi University Mechanical Engineering Department in 2016. She continues her studies in the Industrial Engineering PhD program at Eskişehir Technical University. We welcome Dr. Yakıcı and Research Assistant Çeltek and thank them in advance for their valuable contributions to our department and the education of our students.

Farewell Dinner

We have given a farewell dinner for our leaving colleagues on June 23rd, 2023. Dr. Gonca Yıldırım, Dr. Ayyüce Aydemir Karadağ, Hale Akkocaoğlu Çatmakaş, Simge Yozgat, and Hasan Kavlak embarked on the next chapter of their journeys. Dr. Alp Ertem will be on sabbatical leave for one year. We appreciate what they have done for our department over the years. Their contributions have been invaluable, and they will be dearly missed. We also thank Bilim Kiper and Levent Akgüç for their service to our department as they were assigned to other billets at our university.

We are delighted to announce that Dr. Syed Shah Sultan M. QADRI has joined our department as a new faculty member. Syed Shah Sultan M. QADRI holds a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from Yaşar University. Shah's research lies in the Simulation-Optimization frameworks for transportation management and operations, particularly focusing on optimizations of traffic signal timings. With his experience and expertise, Shah will be an invaluable addition to our department. His research interests include simulations, traffic modeling, transportation planning, and optimization. Prior to pursuing his Ph.D., he received his MS and BS degrees in Applied Mathematics from NED University and the University of Karachi, Pakistan, respectively. In addition to his research, Shah is also committed to providing high-quality education to his students. We look forward to the valuable contributions he will make to our academic community and the success of our students.

“Workshop on Information and Communication Technology: Internet and Social Impact” organized by the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA) was held on February 8, 2020, at the host of Boğaziçi University. At the Workshop, Engineering Terms Dictionary Introductory Meeting within the scope of the TÜBA Turkish Scientific Terms Dictionary Project conducted by Professor Bülent Sankur from the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department of Boğaziçi University was held, and certificates of appreciation were given to academics who contributed to the preparation of the dictionary. Due to his work on Industrial Engineering terms, a certificate of appreciation to our Department Chair Professor Ferda Can Çetinkaya was given by Professor Necdet Ünüvar, who is a member of the Turkish Republic Presidential Food and Health Policy Committee.

Model Factory, Turkey’s first-ever Capability and Digital Transformation Center, opens new horizons for IE students.

Industrial Engineering Club organized a field trip to Serdar Plastik and Turkey’s first-ever Capability and Digital Transformation Center - Model Factory on November 14th, 2019. Mr. Serdar Tütek, CEO of Serdar Plastik and Accountant Board Member of Ankara Chamber of Industry (ASO) 1st Organized Industrial Zone as well as Mert Özkılıç (Class of 2019) welcomed our students and our faculty member Assoc. Prof. Dr. M. Alp Ertem. Ufuk Kaya, the director of the Model Factory, explained the hands-on training opportunities at the Model Factory. The field trip was fruitful for both parties.

The INFORMS Annual Meeting is held each fall and it is the largest Operations Research and Analytics conference bringing together more than 5,000 people from all over the world.

Every year, Operational Research Society of Turkey and a university organize the National Operations Research and Industrial Engineering Congress. This year, the 38th congress was held on June 26th through 29th, 2018 at Anadolu University, Eskişehir, Turkey. Assoc. Prof. Dr. M. Alp Ertem, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Orhan Karasakal and Asst. Prof. Dr. Nureddin Kırkavak presented their talks titled "İstanbul İçi Deniz Taşımacılığı ile İntermodal İnsani Yardım Lojistiği", "PROMETHEE Yontemini Beklenti Teorisi ile Uyumlandıran Bütünleşik bir Yaklaşım," and "Çok Hollü Yerleşim Düzenleme Probleminin Modellenmesi ve Analizi," respectively, at the congress.

Senior design project group successfully represented our department at the finals of the Student Project Contest at the 38th Operations Research & Industrial Engineering National Congress.

Career Days event which is organized by Publicity, Culture and International Relations Office of our university was held at central campus on April 4th. During the day-long event, invited guests gave speeches on career-related topics, and several companies had booths in the common atrium.

Şadi Türk, Chairman of the Board of Directors of our collaborator Başkent Organized Industrial Zone, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Şa-Ra Group, participated in the event as a speaker with the title of "Persistent Success Art." In addition, our alumni Ceyhun Akçael who graduated in 2007 and who is now working as a Sales engineer at OPTIBELT Turkey, and Fatih Gülseren, as well as our another alumni who graduated in 2010, and now working as the Manager of Metal Parts Factory of BOZANKAYA A.Ş., participated in the event as speakers with the titles " Contribution of Social Activities and Volunteer Services for Working Life" and "Imagine, Produce", respectively. We thank all speakers for their valuable contributions to our department and university.

Two IE undergraduates are admitted to the "Intern Engineer Program" of TAI.

TAI recently gave start to "Intern Engineer Program," that aims to accelerate the aeronautical projects carried out by increasing their engineers' productivity. TAI signed the collaboration protocol concerning the internship program with 16 selected universities including Çankaya University that will provide successful engineering students with internship opportunities. Our undergraduate students Elçin Yıldız and İpek Kıratlı are admitted to the internship program. We congratulate our students and wish them success.

Prof. Dr. Orhan Karasakal attended the 1st System Analysis and Studies Panel that was organized by the Undersecratariat for Defence Industries in SSM Nuri Demirağ Hall on the 24th of November. The Panel aims to coordinate, diffuse and relate similar activities in national defence technology activities. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Orhan Karasakal gave a talk titled "İnsan Kaynakları Yönetimi için Bilimsel Yöntemler," that is on scientific methods for human resources management.

Seminar titled "Communication, Occupational Health and Safety for Tomorrow's Leaders" was organized with joint efforts between our department, IEC and UCTEA Chamber of Mechanical Engineers Ankara Branch.

IE undergraduate student, Çağrı Çakmak, received certificates and was entitled a grant on a start-up project business plan.

Çağrı Çakmak, an IE undergraduate student and former IEC president, participated in a seven-day enterpreneurship training that was organized by Çankaya University and Ankara Development Agency with financial support of European Union as part of the Project on the Development of the Ankara Entrepreneurship Ecosystem for Enhancing Youth Employment. 49 students received certificates at the end of the training that was held during 24 April 2017-12 May 2017. Çağrı, with two other team members, shared the first place with another group, and as a result, were awarded a grant from T.C. Small and Medium Business Development and Support Adminitration (KOSGEB). The business plan involved a start-up project aimed to increase the productivity in workplaces by reducing the non-business-related phone calls that negatively affect the productivity. We congratulate our student on his success.

MÜDEK Advisory Board meeting was held as part of our efforts to extend our undergraduate program accreditation.

We held a meeting with the MÜDEK Advisory Board on 20 January 2017 Friday between 14:00-16:00 at Faculty of Engineering meeting room as part of the ongoing work in our department to be accredited by Association for Evaluation and Accreditation of Engineering Programs (MÜDEK) for five years after September 2018 with a general evaluation expected to be held in 2017. We are grateful to our Advisory Board members for their participation and valuable comments during our productive meeting.

Kaan Mandıroğlu, one of our undergraduate students, became the runner-up in the category of 85 kg MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) full in the World Championship held by World Mixed Martial Federation in Kharkiv, Ukraine between 3-7 December 2016. We congratulate our student for his outstanding achivement.

Industry 4.0 seminar was organized with joint efforts between our department and Başkent Organize Sanayi management at Başkent OSB Conference Center.

Onat Totuk gave a talk on Industry 4.0 held in Başkent Organize Sanayi Conference Center. The seminar, organized by joint efforts between our department, Industrial Engineering Club and Başkent Organize Sanayi magament, received great interest from the attendees including faculty, students and industry professionals together.

We visited Başkent Organize Sanayi Bölgesi and held an information session for the firms.

In an attempt to initiate university-industry relations, we previously visited Başkent Organize Sanayi (Başkent OSB) - an industrial zone located 16 km away from our university and 6 km away from Eskişehir Highway which hosts various metal, chemical, defense, mining, printing, food industries. In our second visit during the last week of July, we held an information session to representatives of several firms located in the zone, introducing our department and to give details about the senior projects. Upon the information session, we came together with the representatives of the firms and agreed to meet and discuss possible project opportunities, which will accelerate university-industry relations.

We visited Başkent Organize Sanayi Bölgesi to initiate University-Industry relations.

In an attempt to initiate university-industry relations, we visited Başkent Organize Sanayi (Başkent OSB) - an industrial zone located 16 km away from our university and 6 km away from Eskişehir Highway which hosts various metal, chemical, defense, mining, printing, food industries. Faculty of our department, Technology Transfer Office director and members, and some faculty members from the Mechanical Engineering department attended the meeting held with the Başkent OSB management. A concensus was agreed upon the meeting that will pave the way to conduct senior projects at firms in the zone. A second visit will be made in the last week of July during which our department will hold an information session to give details about the senior projects and to meet with the firms.

36th National Operations Research and Industrial Engineering Congress (OR/IE 2016) was held with contributions from our faculty.

Every year, Operational Research Society of Turkey and a university organize the National Operations Research and Industrial Engineering Congress. This year, the 36th congress was held on July 13th through 15th, 2016 at Yaşar University, İzmir, Turkey.

Our department chair Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ferda Can Çetinkaya served in the Program Committee and a member of our faculty, Asst. Prof. Dr. M. Alp Ertem organized a session on "Humanitarian Logistics".

IE 408 Systems' Design and Implementation final presentations were held.

Final presentations of the one-year long projects done, by groups of senior students under supervision of faculty members, on real-life problems of companies in Ankara were held on June 2nd. Three out of 13 presenting groups which received the highest scores on their year-long efforts from a jury of faculty members and experts/research assistants were selected to present their projects in the 10th Çankaya University R&D Fair. We congratulate all groups presenting their projects.

Our student, Elif Gökçe Kıyak, won a grant for summer training in Europe with YİTAK.

"ERP Awareness Day," a-day long series of seminars and tutorials held on April 25th by experts in Enterprise Resource Planning, was a huge success with a high participant rate from inside and outside our university. The activity was a joint effort between our Industrial Engineering Club and the ERP Committee. A certificate of attendance was given to participants at the end of this successful activity that shed a light to the career development and career path selection for our students. Stated as an "impeccable organization" by the invited speakers of the activity, we congratulate our students and their advisor, Dr. M. Alp Ertem, who have worked hard in making this activity possible and a huge success.

Dr. Gonca Yıldırım is appointed as an adjunct professor to teach an online course at Missouri University of Science & Technology.

Dr. Gonca Yıldırım has been offered a part-time adjunct professor position to teach online a doctorate level course (Economic Analysis of Systems Engineering Projects) at Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) in United States of America. Dr. Yıldırım recently started teaching the course and her efforts will contribute to the linkage agreements, which started last summer between Çankaya University and Missouri S&T. We congratulate Dr. Yıldırım on her appointment.

35th National Operations Research and Industrial Engineering Congress was held with contributions from our faculty.

Every year, Operational Research Society of Turkey and a university organize the National Operations Research and Industrial Engineering Congress. This year, the 35th congress was held on September 9th through 11th, 2015 at Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ferda Can Çetinkaya served in the Organizing Committee and chaired a cluster on "Scheduling and Project Management". Asst. Prof. Dr. Nureddin Kırkavak served in the Advisory Board for the congress. Another member of our faculty, Asst. Prof. Dr. M. Alp Ertem organized and chaired a session on "Humanitarian Logistics". Asst. Prof. Dr. M. Alp Ertem also made two presentations under "Humanitarian Logistics and Societal Problems” cluster titled as “Comparison of Single and Multi-Objective Modeling of Container Allocation in Humanitarian Logistics” and “Models, Solutions and Enabling Technologies in Humanitarian Logistics".

Assistant Professor M. Alp Ertem has been selected for two years as a member on the evaluation board for The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) Science Center Establishment Support Programme as of 17.04.2015. We congratulate and wish him continued success. Science Center Establishment Support Programme (4003) is developed to trigger interest in science by establishing science centers that connect people from all ages and diverse education levels with science as well as provide an experimental and practical learning environment from the information source.

Our undergraduate program's MÜDEK accreditation and First Cycle EUR-ACE Certificate have been extended for another three years.

Our undergraduate program was first accredited in May 1, 2013 for two years by the Association for Evaluation and Accreditation of Engineering Programs (MÜDEK) and awarded the First Cycle EUR-ACE Certificate. Our dedication to quality education has been rewarded with an extension of three more years for the MÜDEK accreditation and the award of First Cycle EUR-ACE Certificate until September 30, 2018.

Ülkühan Küçük, our top graduating senior of class 2015, was awarded with a plaquette and given a graduation gift by the vice chair Ahmet Eniş, treasurer Alaaddin Eksin, and technical official Ali Göktaş of the board of Ankara branch of the UCTEA Chamber of Mechanical Engineers during the Commencement held on the 3rd of July. We are proud of Ülkühan and wish her continued success in her future.

A group of our senior students, Duru Altındemir, Derya Gürcan, Fatma Ülkühan Küçük, Aylin Berk and Fatoş Gamze Özdemir, are awarded the TÜBİTAK 2241/A scholarship for Industry Oriented Bachelor Senior Project Support Program with their senior design project titled "M-Stage Hybrid Flowshop Scheduling for Multiprocessing Identical Parallel Machines with Recirculating Jobs" under supervision of our faculty member Asst. Prof. Dr. Benhür Satır. We congratulate our students and their project advisor for their success.

Senior Design Group 2 successfully represented our department at the finals of the Student Project Contest at the 34th Operations Research & Industrial Engineering National Congress.

Senior Design Group 2 was selected into the final 12 teams from among 22 different universities and 64 different competing projects, and successfully represented our department at the finals of the Student Project Contest at the 34th Operations Research & Industrial Engineering National Congress. Group 2's project, titled "System Improvement for Minimizing the Setup Losses of Press Line in AKSAN Steel Forging", competed against 63 other projects in the first round and 11 other projects at the finals. We congratulate our students Büşra Dindar, Dilşad Karaduman, Gözde Öz, and Şule Ünal and their project advisors Asst. Prof. Haluk Aygüneş, Asst. Prof. Nureddin Kırkavak, and Expert Atıl Kurt.

IE students presented their solutions and decision support systems developed to solve real-life problems met in these firms.

Assistant Professor M. Alp Ertem received a career award for 157,100TL (approximately $73,724) for his project entitled "Sustainable Humanitarian Logistics Through Intermodal Freight Transportation (113M493)" under TÜBİTAK 3501 - National Young Researchers Career Development Program (CAREER). The purpose of this program is to encourage young scientists with Ph.D. degrees and who are at the beginning of their scientific careers by supplying project funds for their studies. Dr. Ertem is among one of the four scientists in Turkey who received a career support in 2013 from the Industrial Engineering discipline.

The key idea of Dr. Ertem's project is to provide for the beneficiaries of a disaster using intermodal transportation when single mode alternative becomes unusable or infeasible. This project explores the opportunities of intermodal freight transportation in sustainable humanitarian aid delivery. The research area involves two main domains: (1) humanitarian aid delivery, and (2) intermodal freight transportation. The first domain is often called "humanitarian logistics" by the academicians and practitioners in the disaster management field. The second domain is intermodal freight transportation. Intermodal transportation is defined as the type of transportation that involves multiple modes. This project aims to investigate the intersection of these two research domains from the perspective of sustainability.

The outcomes of this project will help Prime Ministry Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) reach beneficiaries of a disaster in shorter time, with fewer disruptions, and in an efficient way. The high cost transportation investments could only be justified by using these investments in different ways such as freight transportation. This project will enhance the application of already funded intermodal transportation projects from a humanitarian logistics standpoint such as the Transport Corridor Europe - Caucasus – Asia (TRACECA).
